My fees are calculated based on the number of pages or words you submit, on your ability to write, and on the turnaround time needed, as your writing level and turnaround time will determine the amount of editing work required.  For fee quoting purposes, I consider a standard page to be 8.5" by 11," single-spaced, with a 12 point body text font., or approximately 600 words per page.
Email me a few pages of your work and I will provide a FREE sample edit. This way I can tell how well you write and how much work will be needed, and you can tell whether or not my editing style is right for you.
To give you an estimated price and turnaround time I need basic information about your project. Email me your inquiry with the following information included:
    • Your name
    • A brief description of your project
    • The length in single-spaced pages for standard format or number of words for non-standard formats
    • What services you're interested in
    • The date you need your work completed 
Short projects can be completed in a day or two, but require a 24-hour notice. If you need something edited right away, it will be easier for me to get it back to you ASAP if you attach the document to your initial email. 

I prefer that you send your work in a file format that MS Word can open, such as .doc, .docx or .rtf.
My straight hourly rate for editing is $20 an hour. I can proof or edit approximately 10-15 pages an hour.

If you need writing assistance, ghostwriting services, or research, we can discuss your topic, any graphics or charts needed, your budget and deadline, then come up with a price that we are both comfortable with. I work closely with each client by email and phone to ensure satisfaction.
NOTE: My "per word" rates vary depending on your level of writing. If every sentence needs punctuation and/or word usage corrected, then your per word rate will be higher than the rates quoted below.
I do a first edit and return your work to you for review. I do a second edit and, again, return your work for your review. I do a final edit. This is my process. I DO NOT charge you except for the first edit unless you rewrite and/or reorganize whole sections of your work., and I discuss this with you as we go along, before charges any additional fees.

    • Proofreading = $2.50/page
    • Basic Copyediting - Typed Hard Copy = $3.00 to $4.00/page or 0.06 cents per word, depending on content.
    • Basic Copyediting - Electronic Copy = $3.00 to $4.00/page or 0.06 cents per word, depending on content
    • Advanced Content Editing plus Rewriting Assistance = $5.00/page for non-standard format

If you send me a hardcopy copy of your text, please number your pages. I will redline the pages and return them to you.
When editing, I review the text for spelling, grammar, punctuation, word usage, and other basic technical errors. I also make note of inconsistencies in style, tone, formatting, and any other issues that need your attention in the text using Microsoft's Track Changes feature. I can use the Balloon Call Out feature if preferred, but my preference is to use the Track Changes feature.

I usually follow the Chicago Manual of Style, but I can work to any style guide you prefer.

For academic writing, I will check the text, format, and citations to make sure they comply with MLA, APA, AMA, Chicago, or Turabian style.  If you want your paper formatted to a specific style guide, such as university guidelines for thesis, or dissertation work, I will need a copy of your college's style guide.
Substantial Editing and Rewriting Assistance

In substantive or content editing, I work to improve the general clarity and flow of your text by eliminating wordiness, redundancy, cliches, and inappropriate word choices, replacing passive constructions with active ones, smoothing transitions, rephrasing awkward passages, and reconstructing and moving sentences and paragraphs. This is a more extensive editing process than proofreading or copyediting, so I need your the text submitted in an editable electronic format.
Book and eBook Page & Cover Layout Formatting

I can format your manuscript, ebook, cook book, thesis, or dissertation, etc., in MS Word to comply with APA, MLA, Chicago, or Turabian guidelines (footnotes, citations/references, headings, page numbering, table of contents, tables/figures, etc.) I can retouch and re-size your photos and create graphs and/or charts if needed. And I typically provide you with a finished manuscript formatted to your chosen publisher's guidelines. If you want both an 8.5" x 11" version and a novel sized manuscript, such as 5.5" x 8.5" or 6" x 9," and so forth, I usually provide this at no additional cost or for a flat fee based on the length of the book or thesis/dissertation.

I work in InDesign to create your book front cover and back cover designs, if you have a particular artwork or design you want to use. Most publishers will design your covers for free or for a small fee, but some authors prefer to use their own artwork. If this is the case with you, then I can assist you.

Photo Retouching

I use PhotoShop to retouch your old photos, change them from color to black & white, and re-size them to fit your book contents. I charge $10 per hour for photo retouching.
Things to Remember...
  • Your work is your work, so your copyright remains yours.

  • If you have a rush project, give me at least a 24-hour notice.

  • I will need to know upfront if you have a specific deadline so that I can plan my schedule to meet your needs.

  • I prefer you submit any electronic submissions via email in a Word version.

  • I'm not a literary agent, so I cannot help you with getting published.  I can, however, upload your books, covers and ebooks into publisher websites and assist you with your submissions. I will also share all I know about publishers, their guidelines, writer's resources, etc., and I can suggest online publishers I feel will meet your specific needs.

  • My goal is to make your work publisher-ready and help you develop marketing materials you may need; the rest is up to you.

  • I can help you write your author's bio, marketing blurbs, book cover copy, press releases, query letters, and other marketing copy. If you are one of my clients, I will still request an additional fee in addition to my editing or layout fees, but the fees for these services would be minimal because as my client, I want to give you a price break.

  • I can edit PowerPoint presentations and Adobe Acrobat PDF files. However, PDF files can't be password protected or locked, or I will not be able to change the text. Also, PDF file changes should be fairly minor for the best result.


Track Changes Tutoring By Phone: I typically edit electronic documents using the "Track Changes" feature, but I can edit using the "Balloons" feature, if you prefer. If you do not know how to use one or both of these features to accept or decline my suggested edits, I would be happy to talk you through a little "crash course" in Track Changes by phone... no charge to you.

Learn How to Attach and Email Your Documents: I prefer that you send your work in Microsoft Word or Rich Text (doc or .rtf). If you don't know how to convert your document to rtf or Word, or need help attaching your work to your email, I'll walk you through it by phone... on my dime.

I'll Tutor You in the Basics of Word: As we work together on your document, I am happy to help you broaden your word-processing skills, if needed. So, if you know a little about Microsoft Word, but are clueless about using bullets, numbering, styles, and some of the more advanced advanced features, I'll be happy to help you via phone... no charge to you. I believe information should be shared and people need to be willing to help others learn skills they need.


Individual Projects

I require 50% of the quoted fee up front and 50% on completion. I will consider payments for long projects, ongoing work, and special circumstances.

When I have completed your manuscript with the final changes and it is considered final, I will notify you. Your balance will be due at that time. When I receive your final payment, I will email you your final work, and if desired, I can create a CD containing  Word versions, artwork, photos, graphics, and a PDF of your project. If you would like an emailed or paper invoice or receipt for your records, let me know.

Ongoing Accounts

If you or your company wish to retain my services on a continuing basis, I prefer to work on a retainer. Otherwise, we can set up monthly billing arrangements for work completed. 

Accepted Forms of Payment

All charges are in U.S. dollars. I accept personal checks, cashier's checks, or money orders made out to Cheryl Stewart. I also accept credit card payments and bank transfers via PayPal. To send a PayPal payment, click the "pay online" option at the bottom of the page and it will take you to PayPal.
